NLMK upgrades its steelmaking facilities
Novolipetsk Steel has resumed production at its converter #2 after the upgrade of an emission system in the BOF shop #1.
The project was completed in 107 days during which 1,500 tonnes of steel structures were installed. Prior to this project, NLMK upgraded its converter #1 and it is planned that in March 2010 the upgrade of converter #3 will begin. Total investments in the BOF shop #1 revamp amounted to RUB6.7 billion.
This steelmaking operational upgrade forms part of the framework of the second stage of the Technical Upgrade Program in conjunction with the engineering company Siemens VAI. The key objective of the modernization of the Lipetsk steelmaking operations is the installation of the modern aspiration systems which correspond with the highest environmental standards.
NLMK plans to upgrade all 3 converters in BOF shop #1 by adding a bag filters system enabling the collection of secondary metallurgical gas emissions and dust.
Implementation of the system will guarantee the reduction of BOF emissions by 59% at NLMK’s main production site in Lipetsk and significantly improve working conditions for BOF operational employees.
For reference:
NLMK is consistent in its policy of controlling and reducing its adverse impact on the environment. NLMK;s Environment Management System complies with international standards, and is confirmed by certification audits. In 2008 the Company successfully passed a recertification audit of the Environment Management System performed by certifying agency TUV CERT (Germany). The second stage of NLMK's Technical Upgrade Program for the period from 2007 to 2011 foresees an increase in crude steel output at Lipetsk plan from 9 to 12.4 mtpy.
