NLMK joins national environmental campaign

NLMK joined the Russian Ministry of Natural Resources and the Environment’s Zero Environmental Impact national environmental campaign.

As part of the campaign, NLMK suspended production at a number of its blast furnace, steelmaking, and rolling facilities at its main site in Lipetsk between 9:00 and 11:00 am (Moscow time) on 5 June.

Alexander Kononov, Head of the Industrial Ecology Department at NLMK, said: “Reducing our environmental footprint through the introduction of advanced technologies is among NLMK’s top priorities. We also welcome effective initiatives and organize our own events to raise public awareness of how environmental problems are being resolved. This campaign launched by the Ministry of Natural Resources is a perfect opportunity to remind the public just how important these issues are."

Over the last 12 years, Novolipetsk has increased steel output by 48%, pig iron output by 54%, and sinter output by 22%. The Company has switched to using a closed-loop water cycle and completely stopped discharging waste water, reduced air emissions by 22%, and increased its solid waste recycling rate to a record 94%. This success was made possible by an environmental capex of RUB 21 billion since 2000, with RUB 1.28 billion invested last year alone.
