Environmental management
NLMK Group’s Policy for the Integrated Management System (IMS) is the Group’s fundamental document on environmental protection. It reflects the responsible and sound approach that NLMK takes to managing activities relating to environmental protection and safety.
The Group objectively assesses environmental risks and is committed to minimizing them. It allocates significant resources to various environmental programmes and the implementation of innovative technologies.
One of the purposes of the Integrated Management System of NLMK Group is a mitigation of environmental impact and compliance with the requirements of the international standard ISO 14001.
Environmental targets of the IMS Policy:
- Сomply with the best industry practices in the sustainable use of materials and resources as well as the safety of production processes for the environment
- Ensure the environmental and climate efficiency of operations, as well as respond to the changing environmental and climate conditions in balance with the social and economic needs
Principles of the Policy:
- Recognising responsibility for the environmental impact;
- Expanding the monitoring of environmental impact;
- Planning activities based on the results of regular environmental risk analysis;
- Dedication of NLMK personnel and contractors to the achievement of environmental safety targets;
- Compliance with Russian and international environmental legislation and regulations;
- Openness and accessibility of information about the Group’s environmental activities and impact;
- Maintaining effective communication with internal and external interested parties.
Most NLMK Group production sites have integrated the requirements of the international environmental management standard.
2002
At NLMK Lipetsk, the Environmental Management System based on the concept of sustainable improvement (PDCA model) and the international standard ISO 14001 ‘Environmental Management Systems’ has been in place since 2002. The certification was performed by TÜV CERT (Germany). In 2013, NLMK initiated a change of the certification body and selected one internationally recognized certification authority for all the companies of NLMK Group. This authority successfully conducted the 2014 certification audit and confirmed the compliance of NLMK's Environmental Management System with ISO 14001:2004.
2007
Stoilensky’s Environmental Management System was awarded ISO 14001:2004 certification by Det Norske Veritas (Norway) in late 2007.

In 2011, SOUZSERT (Moscow) - a certification body for integrated management systems - awarded GOST R ISO 14001-2007 (ISO 14001:2004) certification to Dolomit's Environmental Management System. Recertification audit was performed by the same body in 2014.

Stagdok’s Environmental Management System was awarded GOST R ISO 14001-2007 (ISO 14001:2004) certification in 2011 by the certification body with Lipetsk State Technical University. The enterprise passed a certification audit conducted by Moscow-based Techcentre-Register certification authority in 2014.

In 2012, the Environmental Management System of VIZ-Steel was awarded ISO 14001 certification by the certification body SGS (Switzerland). In 2013 certification authority confirmed the compliance of VIZ Steel's Environmental Management System with ISO 14001:2004 standard, which was followed by a successful recertification audit in 2016.

2013
In 2013, NLMK Group commissioned its new metallurgical plant - NLMK Kaluga – that met the highest ecological standards then applicable to ferrous metallurgy enterprises. In 2016, the plant went through the certification of its Environmental Management System which confirmed its compliance with ISO 14001:2004.
2015
In 2015, NLMK Russia Long launched the Environmental Management System at NLMK Ural and NLMK Metalware. Certification authority successfully completed the certification procedures at these companies and issued ISO 14001:2004 certificates of compliance.
2015
In 2015, a new version of ISO 14001:2015 ‘Environmental Management Systems. Requirements and guidance for use’ came into effect, which retained the systematic approach to environmental management based on the concept of sustainable improvement (PDCA model), and introduced the methodology for environmental risk evaluation and management.
2016
In 2016, Altai-Koks implemented its Environmental Management System, which was certified by certification authority for compliance with ISO 14001:2004 standard.
2016
In 2016, Russian companies of NLMK Group developed their programmes of transition to the new version of ISO 14001, and in 2017-2018, certification authority performed audits of their Environmental Management Systems to verify their compliance with ISO 14001:2015 in the frameworks of ‘umbrella’ certification. Under the ‘umbrella’ system, a single certificate was issued to NLMK Group (NLMK Lipetsk) covering all the Russian production sites of the Group.

Currently, NLMK Lipetsk, Stoilensky, Altai-Koks, Dolomit, Stagdok, NLMK Ural, VIZ-Steel, NLMK Kaluga, NLMK Metalware have proven their compliance with 14001:2015 and are covered by the common certificate of NLMK Group (NLMK Lipetsk).
